Around 30,000 hectares of proclaimed wilderness in the Groot Winterhoek mountains about 10 km from Kariega (Uitenhage), managed by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency and protecting the Swartkops River catchment. Fynbos, valley bushveld and ravine forest shelter bushbuck, grey rhebok and some 180 bird species, and caves hold protected Khoi-San rock art. Day hikes follow the Blindekloof, Emerald Pool and Dam trails, with a two-day upper route for experienced hikers. Campsites, picnic sites and Rooikrans Lodge are bookable; gates open 08:00 to 16:30.
