Founded in 1874, this SANBI garden on Swartkops Road in Prestbury, Pietermaritzburg, is best known for its avenue of plane trees and for mixing cultivated theme gardens with natural forest, wetland and grassland. Clivia Dam, a cycad collection, a Zulu demonstration garden, braai and picnic spots, an adventure park and more than 180 recorded bird species fill a full day out. The gates open daily from 09:00 and payment is by card only. Dogs are allowed on a leash throughout for R5 a visit, with a current rabies certificate lodged at the office.
