One of Cape Town's longest-running restaurants, Maria's has served Greek taverna food on Dunkley Square in Gardens since the 1950s. Tables spill out under the trees on the square, which is where most dog owners settle in for meze, lamb meatballs, halloumi and slow-cooked lamb with ouzo and artichokes. The owners keep their own dogs on site and the welcome for visitors' dogs is famously generous: a water bowl waits at the entrance and well-behaved dogs are sometimes handed a free-range lamb bone.
