A large green space on the slopes above Cape Town's southern suburbs, Tokai Park forms part of Table Mountain National Park and is cared for by the Friends of Tokai Park. Upper Tokai holds restored Cape fynbos with more than 700 recorded plant species, while the lower plantation section has shaded paths, a Bridle Path and around 21 graded mountain-bike trails. Walkers, runners, horse riders, cyclists and dog walkers share the network, and a SANParks activity permit is needed to bring a dog.
Note from SitnStay: Dog walking requires a SANParks Level 1 My Activity Permit (annual, max two dogs per permit holder); once-off day permits for Tokai can be bought online. Dogs must be under control at all times, with off-leash walking only in designated areas; on the fynbos trails dogs are to stay leashed in spring, summer and autumn to protect ground-nesting birds. Permits are sold at the Tokai plantation office on Tokai Road.
