Whalebone Pier is an 80-metre concrete stormwater outlet turned landmark along Umhlanga's O'Connor Promenade, next to the 1954 lighthouse. Its ribbed mast structure, designed by architect Andre Duvenage, earned it a spot on CNN's list of the world's most beautiful piers, and mosaic artwork by Jane du Randt lines the walkway. Lit up at night, it is a popular sunrise and sunset stop on the shaded, patrolled promenade running between Durban View Road and the Hawaan Forest.
