Grotto Beach runs for roughly 18 kilometres along the Hermanus coastline toward De Kelders, with calm, sheltered water that makes it one of the area's most popular family swimming spots, plus a playground, parking and a beachfront restaurant. It carries Blue Flag status. Dogs are welcome on a leash on the general beach, but a 2024 bylaw update removed the previous off-leash pilot zone, and dogs are barred entirely from the Blue Flag section whenever the flag is flying.
Note from SitnStay: Dogs must be kept on a leash on the general beach and owners must clean up after them; the Blue Flag section bans dogs completely while the flag flies each summer. A prior off-leash pilot zone at the eastern end was discontinued under the Overstrand cat and dog bylaw, so no section is currently off-leash.
